Anton Scholtz and Mark Jones due to pick up awards at 2007 LCU Dinner - a summary
Leinster Cricket Union awards - Three awards on the way to
Observatory Lane. Huge congratulations to Anton Scholtz and Mark Jones
who have been confirmed as award winners this season, and will pick up their respective awards this Friday at the LCU dinner in Old Belvedere RFC. The Marchant Cup for the provinces leading batsman (professionals are not elligible) was eventually won by Scholtz after a nip and tuck battle with Dom Joyce for
most of the year. Anton is the first Leinster player to win the award
since Dave Kent in 1980, and it is the 22nd time that it has come to
Leinster since it was instituted in 1921. Gerry Duffy leads the pack with 5 awards, Frank Connell with 3, and Eddie Ingram, NH Lambert and Jack Short with
two each. Scholtz has also picked up the Samuels Cup, awarded to the
outstanding all-ronuder in Senior Cricket. As far as I can see, he is
the first Leinster player to win the award since Gerry Duffy collected
his third Samuels Cup in 1976. Amazingly Scholtz is only the second
Leinster player to have done the Marchant Cup/Samuels Cup double, the
previous occasion being Gerry Duffy in 1970. That year Gerry scored 454
runs at 76 and took 31 wickets at 13. To complete the haul, Mark Jones
has won the Solomon Cup for most catches by a fielder. This is
a recently instituted award that seems to find it's way to Observatory
Lane fairly frequently, JP O'Dwyer being a previous winner, and a
certain Anton Scholtz in 2006. A huge congratulations to both of them,
but especially Anton.
