League
- STOP PRESS - After the LCU issues the confirmed end of season tables,
the 7ths were moved up to 2nd place - 3rd in Junior B - Only two of the
first seven league matches were won, later reduced to one win, after
the Merrion victory was overturned. Then a remarkable run of 8
successive victories took Niall Buckley's men to the brink of
promotion. That ended in ultimate failure, more than made up for by the skipper's wedding at the end of the season.
Cup - First round defeat to Old Belvedere
Review - After the disappointing relegation of 2006, promotion was the only aim of this
season. Thanks to a still unknown LCU penalty on Merrion, the 7ths were
promoted to 2nd spot, acheiving the goal by a the skin on eleven sets
of teeth. An inspiring late season run kept up the pressure on the
leaders all the way
. As ever the batting was built on the rock that
is Kenny Byrne. 314 runs at 24.15 is no mean achievement on some of the
tracks that the 7ths have to play on (mainly St Columba's!). He was
ably backed up by a host of centurions, with Apoor Vyas, Marty
Block, Saqib Shahnawaz and Phil Benson all managing 100 runs in the
season. Greg Lawlor was just one of several youngsters who contributed
massively to the season, Lawlor getting 99 runs at 24.75.
The
bowling was dominated by the exotic sextet of Vyas, Ullah, Block, Khan,
Shahnawaz and Carroll, all averaging under 20. The skipper Buckley did
well in balancing the blooding of youth with the pursuit of success.
