Renno's Review 2009 |
League
- As I'm sure everyone within the team would agree, it was something of a bizarre season. In a run of four games in mid summer, they were bowled out for 67, 33, 151-7, and 82. But they bounced back, winning the last two games of the season, Rory McMahon hitting consecutive 50's to finish the season on a high. Mid table is a pretty decent performance. |
Cup
- The combined talens of North Wicklow and Avondale proved too much on many occasions this season, and the 1st round of the cup was another occasion, Leinster losing by 86 runs |
Review
-
The leadership that was missing elsewhere, was in abundant supply on the 6ths with Trevor Dunne providing the neccessary. Bharat Sharma scored 252 @ 21, Trevor Dunne 247 @ 16.47 and Rory McMahon a squad leading 225 @ 25. Asim Mumtaz (125 @ 17.86) and Howard Block (108 @ 18) also contributed. With the ball, Peter May was probably the pick, his debut season for Leinster yielding 12 wickets @ 9.67. Sharma (16 @ 20.75), and Howard Block (10 @ 18.8) were also lynchpins of the attack, and with Niall Carroll had one of his best seasons in years with 12 wickets @ 14.67. A model of how to run a junior team, happy settled squad leading to success |

6th XI News 2009 |
September 13th - The season could go on until December for all Rory McMahon cares. His second 50 of the season came hot on the heels of his first, and helped Leinster finally beat a North Wicklow/Avondale XI this season at at least the 7th time of asking. McMahon's 59 was helped by most of the other batsmen (five others scored between 11 and 23), and then five of the bowlers took wickets (a team performance if ever there was one) as North Wicklow fell 44 runs short to make 111ao from 35 overs. A solid season for the 6ths, that will be fully reviewed over the coming weeks. |
August 29th - The 6ths penultimate game of the 2009 season saw a comprehensive win over Malahide, with the game notable for several Leinster performances. The win earned the 6ths full points, moving to 222 from 406 (54.7%). The league tables are a bit out of date, but that looks like a solid 5th/6th position. The heroes were May, Niazi and McMahon senior. Peter May returned his best figures for Leinster, 5-14, Imran Niazi scored a solid 81* at the top of the order, and Rory McMahon scored his maiden 50 for the club. Niazi and McMahon ensured Leinster reached 184-5, and then May finished it all off as Malahide were 96 all out |
August 23rd - As the rugby season approaches, it's not just the shadows that are getting longer in Kenilworth Square. The grass in St Mary's famous old ground is back up to it's winter length, and hence cricket has become more of pucking than a stroking affair. Batting the first, Leinster could only get to 90 off 40 overs, mainly thanks to a determined 37 from Bharat Sharma. In reply, North County were indebted to Joey Mooney who had the pre-requisite power to clear the grass, and see North County to a three wicket victory. Points wise, the 6ths now have 192 from 376 (51.1%) |
August 16th - A walloping of the highest order for the 6ths on Sunday. J Dunleavey made up for a losing 50 against the 3rds with a quite magnificent 137 as Merrion ran up 298. Unbelievably it could have been a whole lot more, as Merrion were pulled back after the drinks break. Peter May emerged with some credit with the ball, taking 4-40 in 6.5 overs, his first appearance on he honours board. To be honest it was probably game ove at tea, as the 6ths - weakened by the 5ths also playing - have struggled to get runs for most of the season. It was to be the case again, as only Bharat Sharma with 24 passed 20 . Somehow, the 6ths got 9 points from this (the points system used by the 1sts and 2nds, with the emphasis on margin of victory makes more sense to me) and hence have 185 from 346 (53.5%) |
August 15th - A walkover given by struggling The Hills 4ths, which doesn't really help the 6th's position too much. They receive 16 points from 16, moving to 176 from 316 (55.7%), probably in 7th place |
August 2nd - Good news for the 6ths at last. Not a victory - that may be stretching it a bit, but several batsmen getting their head down and building an innings. Three figures were reached for the first time since July 12th, as Trevor Dunne (33), Bharat Sharma (37) and Rory McMahon (30*) all found a bit of form. However, 151-7 isn't the best score in North County, especially if the game was on the mat. Of the seven bowlers used in an attempt to prevent a North County victory, only Niall Carroll (2-16 from 6) and Kamal Raza (0-25 from 8) really caused any problems. North County passed the total for the loss of 6 wickets in the 32nd over. Nine points from the match - ten games, 160 points from 300 for a percentage of 53.33%, Maybe down to 9th in the league, clinging on to the last Division 9 spot. |
July 25th - It wouldn't be too hard to spend longer writing this than it took the entire Leinster innings to pass. 33 runs, six ducks and only Kevin McPhilemy made double figures. I don't have the partnerships in front of me, but it looks as if Leinster were about 20-1 before losing the next 8 wickets for 13 runs. At tea it looked like a pretty regulation match, albeit on a pretty damp wicket after the week's rain. North Wicklow made 154 from 40 overs, with the wickets shared around. Who knows what happened at tea - the North Wicklow bowlers feasting on spinach, or maybe the Leinster batsmen had Rohypnol put in their drinks? As we near the end of the season, I'll keep an eye on the league placings for each team. After 9 games, the 6ths now have 151 points from 270 (five measly points from this match). That means 55.9%, probable 8th spot in the league, which is still good enough for Division 9 next year (for places 2-9 in Inter B) |
July 15th - I thought of maybe suppressing the news of the 6ths match during the week in the style of an old communist news agency. Instead the citizens could just be informed that, "The Great Leader today unveiled new technologies that will ensure our domination for years to come.". However, in a spirit of Glasnost, it should probably be told that the 6ths were annihilated (whether this was mutually assured, I'm unsure). Pembroke pressed the red button, and the Leinster batting disappeared in a mushroom cloud to the tune of 67 all out. Unfortunately it seems that the Leinster retaliation was destroyed before it could be launched, as Pembroke romped home by 9 wickets. |
July 12th - A great chase in the luxuriant surroundings of Bird Avenue. The 6ths ran up 199-5 in pursuit of Merrion's total, the innings centred around Mr Overmans' 62 and skipper Dunne's 33. Earlier, Merrion collapsed after a good start, the pick of the bowlers being Colm Byrne with 3-18 from 4. Leinster have now won 4 from 7.
|
June 28th - One of life's little mysteries. The 6ths game at the weekend against the Hills in Balbriggan was called off due to Balbriggan being unfit for play.
|
June 21st - Leinster's fine cup tradition (fine as in paper thin) continued with a thumping first round loss in Observatory Lane to the soon to be merged Avondale. The visitors ran up 224-4 without any bother, the pick of the bowlers Will Rolfe with 2-30 from 8. In reply to that, the LCC batsmen had better things to be doing than hanging around in the middle, and were all out for 138, Howard Block illuminating the show though with 36. Back to the league
|
June 14th - Another tight match, and another win, this time in Sydney Parade, as Pembroke 4ths were overcome by 13 runs. Not too much individual brilliance on display from Leinster, just a solid team performance. Mssrs Dunne (41) and Mumtaz (30) were the planks that the fence of Leinster's total of 175-9 was built with. In reply the wickets were shared around as The Block brothers and Bharat Sharma grabbed two each, with the Brook finishing 13 short.
|
June 7th - Mullingar completed the double over the 6ths, and the 6ths moved to 2-3, with a seemingly poor bowling display in Westmeath. Only Vikram Singh (0-15 from 8) and Bharat Sharma (1-30 from 8) went for less than five an over, as Mullingar ran up 208-6. Many of the Leinster batsmen got a start in reply; Dunne (24), Khizer Khan (28), Sharma (36), Mulcahy (26) and Rory McMahon (25) but none went on to make a big score, and the innings closed on 188/8 - 20 runs short
|
May 31st - Win number two, this time of the convincing type against Rush. Trevor Dunne scored his first big runs of the season with 71, and Asim Mumtaz assisted with 49, as Leinster ran up 206 from their 40 overs. It was all too much for Bagnalstown, who crashed to 71 all out, Bharat Sharma being the pick of the bowlers with 3-3.
|
May 23rd - Finally Trevor Dunne's men got their first win of the season with a slightly nervous three wicket win over Rush. The bowlers set up the win, especially Niall Carroll with a return to form with 4-29 from 8. Once Rush had been dismissed for 113, it should have been relatively easy for the batsmen, but hard work was made, before a good partnership between Kenny Byrne (26*) and Rory McMahon (16) for the 6th wicket nearly saw the 6ths home. Two more late wickets made it a bit too close for comfort, but the season is up and running.
|
May 10th - The 6ths made it 2 from 2 (losses) with this defeat against Mullingar that probably wasn't as close as it looked. Batting first, Leinster made only 125-6 on the Mountpleasant square, runs mainly coming from Rakesh Dixit (25) Kenny Byrne (34*) and Rory McMahon (18). To only score 125 whilst losing only 6 wickets is always criminal, and Mullingar completed the robbery, by knocking the runs off in the 32nd over for the loss of 7 wickets.
|
May 3rd - An ignomonious start to the season if ever there was one. The positives few, although trips to Bagnalstown rarely seem to bring victory . Firstly, the news from the physio's couch. Ciaran Casserly looks to be out of action for several weeks, after a Grade 6 tear of the interior posterior bivalve muscle. The sickening injury occured when Casserly turned at high speed in attempting a quick two. There followed three collapses, firstly Casserly to the ground, and then the rest of the team in laughter, and finally the rest of the batting order, as Leinster 6ths were crawled to 101-9 from their 40 overs. Only Howard Block was able to hold his head up high with 34. Earlier the hosts scored a distinctly useful 202-9, with several interesting bowling figures, some impressive, others less so. Dixit and Howard Block were in the first category with 2-11 from 8 and 3-26 from 8 respectively. Rory McMahon was somewhere in the middle with 3-66 from 7 overs, and the chairman had a day to forget - 0-45 from 4 and a crocked back. Footage of Casserly's "airlift" should be on the site later in the week.
