Fifths Introduction:
The 5ths have been the Real Madrid of LCC, with a trophy cabinet groaning under the weight of the silverware won. Finding themselves in Junior A at the start of the 1990's, two promotions in 1995 and 96 saw the 5ths move up to Intermediate A, a position that cannot be bettered until higher sides get promoted. In cups, the glorious 5ths have been winners of the Junior Cup (1991 and 1995), the Intermediate Cup (2005 and runners up in 2003) and the Whelan Cup in 1997.

Renno's Review 2009
League - Records are a bit scarce, as the multi captaincy issues meant that scorecards were hard to come by. However, batting didn't seem to be the problem. Imran Mohammed had his famous blitzkrieg against Halverstown, adding another 96 runs to finish with 201 @ 40.20. Khizer Khan was also useful with 198 @ 39.60, Ikram Niazi scored 170 runs whilst onlky being dismissed once, Michael Lenehan 131 @ 32.75 and Bard Overmans 126 @ 31.50. You don;t tend to finish 3rd from bottom in the league with figures like that, so the problems must have been elsewhere. Only four bowlers took more than three wickets - Imran with 11 @ 6.45, Bharat Sharma ((9 @ 12.78), Rakesh Dixit (8 @ 20.88) and Vikram Singh (8 @ 13.25). Those perennial bugbears of lack of leadership, and an unsettled squad didn't help either
Cup - A fine 1st round performance to beat Pembroke by 8 wickets (Scully, Maybury-Thornton and Lenehan starring), followed by a many time postponed match against YM, resulting in a bowl out victory. The run came to an end with defeat to North Wicklow/Avondale.
20/20 - A match that has disappeared into the mists of time due to not being able to get the scorecard. I've heard that Pembroke won in a match where the scores finished level
Review - It's been said a thousand times that success doens't come to teams without a settled team or a settled captaincy. The 5ths struggled on, cobbling together teams throughout the season. Of the 49 players used, only 27 were members of the club, a situation that won't be allowed to happen again.
5th XI News 2009

August 22nd - The 5ths finished their 2009 season with a thumping win, possibly one of the biggest in the club's history, beating Halverstown by 228 runs. It was the Imran Mohammed show from the middle to the finish. The forthcoming rugby season had meant that the grass in Kenilworth Square was up to it's autumn height, and there was no value to be had from graceful cover drive or delicate late cut. Instead, it was up to the power men to take over, and in Ikram Niazi, and Imran Mohammed Leinster were well served. Niazi scored 57, before Imran started an amazing blitz, hitting 16 sixes, and reaching his century eight overs after coming to the crease. A probably shell shocked Halverstown then collapsed to 36 all out, Bharat Sharma taking 5-27, and Imran 5-3. The table is obviously not finalised, but it looks as if the 5ths will be in Division 8 for 2010.

August 16th - A tough old day was had by all in Knockharley. After a few map reading problems, mixed in with a few internal club communications problems with regard to umpires, Leinster received a fearful dicking from Knockharley 2nds. Ikram Niazi scored well again, his unbeaten 79 being about the only contribution of note to Leinster's total of 144-7. From the scorecrad, it then looks as if Knockharley took it easy to begin with, before accelarating rapidly, knocking the runs off in a ball over 30 overs, for the loss of only two wickets.

August 8th - A probable victory was lost to the vagaries of the weather in Halverstown's beautiful ground by the Liffey. Runs were easy to come by, wuth 50s for Jeremy Erwin and I Zubair, and 30s for Charles Richards, Rakesh Dixit and Ikram Niazi. 278 would hopefully have been a winning total, but the rains came with Halverstown at 42-2.

August 1st - The 5ths produced the biggest victory in the club this year (partly making up for some of the huge defeats), as they beat YMCA 3rds by 171 runs in Kenilworth Sqaure. The Leinster total was indebted to Imran Mohammed, the crash bang merchant, who has had a pretty decent August (see above). The innnings was in some trouble, until Imran (80*) and Khizer Khan (49) put on a good few for the 5th wicket. YM needed 213 and didn't get very close at all. The start of the show was Rakesh Dixit, who produced his best ever performance for Leinster, 5-6, as YM quickly fell to 41 all out.

July 18th - More news from PLanet 5ths, this time thanks to the good offices of Michael Sharp. I haven't done the sums, but it seems as if Leinster has lost every single encounter this year against North Wicklow/Avondale. This match was no different. Avondale racked up 196-9, Bard Overmans being the pick of the bowlers with 3-45 from 8. There were a couple of old friends bwing welcomed back ot the club, James Tremlett for a one off match on loan from the West Midlands Fire Brigade (Wolverhampton not Athlone), and James Downey making a long overdue appearance. When it cam eto chase though, the Leinster line-up was found wanting. Michael Lenehan top scored once again, his 39, being the best innings by some way. Leinster were al out for 120, 76 runs short.

June 27th - After a long long gap in communications, I'm beginning to piece together the 5th's season, although not neccesarily in chronological order. The 5ths made their debut in the lovely surroundings of Kenilworth Square at the end of June, and Merrion enjoyed their day as well, winning at a canter. A Leinster XI with a feminine touch saw Rebecca Rolfe score 39, Khizar Khan 58 (obviously not so feminine) and Laura Delany, 15 undefeated at the end. However 167 wasn't enough to trouble Merrion, especially Steven McGrath who pounded 86. Merrion lost 4 wickets and won with 6 overs to spare.

June 24th - News of this mid-summer fixture has finally been incovered, and it was a notable victory in a couple of aspects. Michael Lenahan scored his first men's 50 , with a 62, as the 5ths totalled 178-9 against Clontarf 4ths. Asim Mumtaz also scored 32, setting a total that wasn't the most testing in the world, but was markedly better than some other totals this season. In reply Vikram Singh came close to matching his 2008 form with a scintillating 5-17 to reduce Clontarf to 126 all out, three run outs aiding the cause.

June 21st - Much of what I heard on the 5ths grapevine has been doom and gloom, but this comprehensive victory over Pembroke was definitely of the champagne sort rather than plonk. Without a complete scorebook, it's a bit difficult to work out the details, but it seems as if Pembreok were doing OK at maybe 40-1, before a startling collapse, saw them dismissed for 90. Michael Scully (4-19), Michael Lenehan (3-6) and Vikram Singh (2-11) were the protaganists. Any doubts over knocking off a small total were soon erased as Lenehan thumped 36, and Scully an unbeaten 30 as Leinster won by 8 wickets

June 13th - Another loss for the 5ths, but a cracking game all the same. Avondale 1sts/North Wicklow 2nds are a fairly handy outfit, and they showed their class with a successful chase of 231. The Leinster total was based on a good 87* by the mysterious Mr Ovenden, and 62 coming in at number 7 for the not so mysterious Khizer Khan. Together, they put on 82 for the 6th wicket. When the Wicklow side had their turn to bat though, wickets were hard to come by. Most successful was the alternative Canadian kids entertainer Rafi, making a guest appearance, taking 3-17. Sadly a rendition of his classic, "Baby Beluga" wasn't enough to stop the hosts winning by 3 wickets in the penultimate over.

June 1st - News comes to me on the last day of August of the 5ths first win of the season (on the first day of June). I could have wriggled on my posterior from Phoenix to my home quicker than it's taken to get here. Anyway, a win is a win - this one built on a 47 from Dave Lappin (which must have been one of his first knocks of the season, and contributions from Khizer Khan (26), Graham Whelan (29) and yet another score from Alan Godfrey (this time 39). 181 all out was too much for Phoenix though, who onnly made 138-9, the bowlers going Dutch, and sharing the wickets around.

May 9th - No action on Saturday, as Sandyford hadn't survived the sodden morning's deluge

May 2nd - Just the one match, and just as well, because the losses seem to keep on coming at the moment. I haven't heard a final score, but when I left Leinster 5ths were 94-8 chasing 159 to win against Knockharley. It was a case of what might have been after Paul Reed and Mick Scully reduced the midlanders to 74-7, but a late surge by a late order batsmen (apologies for the anonymity) saw Knockharley recover to a target that looked a little too big for Leinster's batting line-up. Whilst most eyes turned to Croke Park, those of Leinster (CC) supporters turned to the heavens as a succession of batsmen failed to knuckle down and display a bit of grit and determination. Hopefully we had a miraculous 9th and 10th wicket partnership to render this missive obsolete (It didn't come)

Not quite the start that everyone was after. An accident on the Merrion outfield left the mower stranded, and cricket postponed for the week. Both sides probably ended up happy as trying to find a 5th XI the week after Easter is never the easiest
