Renno's Review 2009 |
League
- With Paul Delany being elevated to the richly deserved position of Ireland Women's coach, the 4ths suffered a lack of leadership, with results suffering. Paul tried his best, but for most of the season the 4ths joined the 5ths as a fairly rudderless crew. Five wins and eight losses meant a fairly lowly league position, with sporadic wins throughout the season depending on what team was available. |
Cup
- A cracking first round match with Leinster losing to Dundrum by 1 wicket. I'd prefer 4 boring wins and a trophy! |
Review
-
With Paul Rodgers leaving the 3rds captaincy just before the season started, Paul Delany getting his new post at roughly the same time, and the 5ths being captainless, the club's middle sides suffered from a lack of leadership. This was largely reflected on the field, with the 4ths not having a settled squad. 46 players used in the 14 games tells it's own story. No one really starred - Imran Mohammed was the only one to get more than 120 runs (173 @ 34.60) , and Vikram Singh took 14 wickets @ 7.86 (mainly in the second half of the season) and Rutug Mehta 13 @ 13.46 (mainly in the first half of the season). 28 bowlers were used in the season, just adding to the feeling that this wasn't a team - just a series of individuals playing under the 4th team flag. |

4th XI News 2009 |
September 12th - Not the ideal way to close the season. Not too many memories to take through the winter. Not great. Only Paul Delany (24) and Will Rolfe (31) passed 20 as the 4ths tried to overhaul Laois' 256-9 in 45 overs. PauL Delany contributed a fine all round performance, with 3-30 with the ball. Apart from Rolfe, no one else can really dine out on stories from this match - the final margin was 116 runs.
September 6th - If playing at Lords on a glorious July afternoon is about as good as it gets, then Wesley on a September afternoon with the rain lashing is somewhere at the other end of the scale. Both sides were keen to get some cricket in (however I was 5 miles away in Rathmines with the seconds, and we wanted to play as well. There's keen and then there's keen) and it was eventually agreed to play a 25 over match. Dundrum blazed away, scoring a pretty fantastic 177-3 from the allotted time, all the Leinster bowlers struggling, Rory Geraghty the pick with 2-33 from 6. In return Niks Nagar also did his bit to enliven proceedings with a blistering 70, but it wasn't enough, as even with 22 from Gareth Delany, Leinster closed on 138-5
August 9th - David Lappin continued his rich vein of form with a 65 at the top of the innings in Malahide, setting up a total of 188 from 40 overs. Graham Whelan (32) and Will Rolfe (23) both contributed, as in fact did most of the batsmen. Rakesh Dixit made the initial breakthroughs with 4-27, before Imran Mohammed and Bard Overmans polished off the tail with three wickets each. Malahide were second from bottom before the match started, and won't have improved their position. Leinster dropped one point, taking 29 from 30, 175 from 300 overall, and 58.3*. No change in position
August 2nd - Some days will be remembered when sitting in the rocking chair on a cold winter's evening. This wasn't one of them. Old Belevedere were at least bowled out - for 229, although none of the bowlers would look back on the day with any fondness. Gavin Miller took three wickets, but got hit for 33 in 5 in the process. If Leinster had got into 1st gear in the pursuit, it would have been something. However the gear box seemed only to offer reverse, as the 4ths quickly fell to 69 all out. Highlights of the batting were...........ok, there weren't any. 7 points were gleaned, 146 points from a possible 270 and 54.1%. Still solidly Division 7 (Note: Gavin Miller has informed/told me that the peculiarities of the Kenilworth mat, mean that once wet, batting becomes impossible. This was another of those matches where a tea time deluge meant that batting for Leinster was nigh on impossible. Apologies to all involved!)
July 25th - As has been their want this season, the 4ths followed up last week's victory over North Kildare, with a defeat against the same opposition. Unfortunately not too many positives to report on, unless you happen to be called Delany. The famed cricketing family continue to contribute to Leinster performance, and if it wasn't for Paul's 55 and Laura's 20, there wouldn't have been much else. 135-8 was never going to be enough, and North Kildare knocked it off with 6 overs and 9 wickets to spare. Four points from the match which drops the 4ths to 57.9% and probable 5th place. That means Division 7 next year - 4th would be Division 6.
July 19th - I still can't quite get a handle on the form of the 4ths this year. From last week's disaster, there was a semblance of a comeback in this tight victory over North Kildare at the weekend. The game was swapped at the last minute to Observatory Lane, and the week's incessant rain created a good old fashioned wicket on the bottom square. North Kildare were bundled out for 93, with Vikram Singh continuing his recent good form with 4-17, Ifti Sabir 3-12, and Michael Scully 3-46. It wasn't quite plain sailing though. Sabir and Overmans put on 30 odd (Sabir 17, Overmans 26) but then a collapse of seismic proportions saw the tailend up against it. However, the earthquake proofing was provided by Messrs Scully (8*) and Whelan (14*) who saw Leinster home by 3 wickets.
July 12th - The positives first. Gareth Delany had a good game with 16 and 1-30 from 7. Vikram Singh continues to take wickets with 3-22 and...........that is about it. A dicking by any standards, the 4ths slumped to a 99 run defeat to Sandyford. Chasing only 162 to win, there was obviously a fault with the scoreboard, as Leinster managed the 62 - but missed the 1 in front of it. I still haven't managed to get up to a game in Kenilworth Square, and nothing but good continues to be heard from those who have played there, but one can only assume that the mat turned to dust at the end of the match, turning square and making batting for Leinster impossible. Or maybe not.(NB - Brian Godfrey reports that a huge storm at tea, made the outfield sodden and very difficult to score runs on, which contributed in no small part to the defeat)
June 28th - The 4ths opened proceedings on the new ground at Kenilworth Square. Initial reports of the ground were very good, and best of all the 4ths beat Malahide to move to a record of 3-2. There is plenty of doom and gloom around at the moment as many members have left for old shores due to the state of the economy, but this has given the opportunity to others, with youth members filling the spaces left by the emigrants. Matt Lenehan is one of these, who narrowly missed out on a maiden mens 50 at the weekend, his 47, alongside Khizer Khan's identical score, got the innings off on the right track. Bikram Arora came in at the end to bash 26, as Leinster got to 217 all out. In response, seven bowlers took at least one wicket, with Vikram Singh (3-28) and Rutug Mehta (2-11) taking multiples as Malahide were all out for 161.
June 20th - The 4ths have had a decent cup record in the last few years - unfortunately 2009 will not be one of them. Unbelievably this was the second time that Dundrum had beaten the 4ths by 1 wicket this season, but the fact that the team was extremely young bodes well. The Leinster innings was based on the slightly older pillars of David Lappin (38 - runs not years) and the mysterious I Mohammed (71). Apart from that only Rory Geraghty reached double figures with 17. The Middle 2 cup is now only 40 overs, so that wasn't the worst total in the world. Dundrum set off quickly, by were pulled back by Rutug Mehta (1-22 from 6) and then Vikram Singh (4-16 from 8). However that one elusive wicket was all the difference.
June 14th - A month off for the 4ths, and back to earth with a bang. No one really got going as the 4ths batted first, apart from one of several returning players. Mick Brennan has been a loss from his middle order role as enforcer, and he was back to somewhere near his best here with 68. There wasn't too much support though, with the only notables being Gareth Delany (29) and Rutug Mehta (17*) who both had PB's in men cricket. Civil Service obviously needed to be somewhere else in a hurry though, knocking off the 181 runs in the 30th over for the loss of only three wickets. Rutug added to his season's tally with another two, although at the cost of 8 per over (2-32 from 4).
May 17th - Laois is always a difficult place to bring a win from, and this game was no exception. The match was initially set up by a big opening partnership between Clive Colleran (44) and "I Mohammed" (91 - identity to be revealed). The total of 201 in 45 overs was enough to bowl at, but it looked to be tight all the way, with Laois scoring well above the required rate. Rutug Mehta was again the pick of the bowlers with 3-42 from 7, Mick Scully and Gavin Miller picking up 2 wickets a piece at the end.
May 2nd - A thrilling match, which may have seen the first flowerings of a future club star. Rutug Mehta has been impressing in senior nets of late, and his early season practice was rewarded with his first five wicket haul for the club (5-43 from 8). It was a match with several positive points, Imitiaz Nazir played a belligerent knock of 90, Gavin Miller a return to form with bat (39*), James Downey a solid end of innings knock (22*), and even an injury free Sam Meighan bowling a tidy spell (albeit for the opposition). Trinity finished 2 runs short after the excitement of the final over.
April 26th - The 4ths got their season off to a stuttering start. I only have a summary in front of me. Leinster 137ao (Asif Hussein 50*, Paul Delany 21, Graham Whelan 11, Saneer 4-17, Medwin 1-7, Robin 1-17) In reply Dundrum won by 1 wicket - 139-9 (Ashley 80, Medwin 13, Vinu 8, Hussein 4-13, Bharat Sharma 3-19, Delany 2-16) NB A tempestuous affair by all accounts. Thankfully the LCU's new umpiring wasn't put to the test as Jim McGeehan was thrown into the lion's den. I can only imagine what would have happened if there had been umpiring representatives from the clubs
