League
- Very, very nearly, the ultimate disaster. After struggling with
availability early in the season, and losing the first three matches,
rain left a gaping two month hole in the middle of the season. When
2007 recommenced, the 2nds were in a race against time. Nine remaining
games should have been enough to turn the season around, but
remarkably, five of those were rained off. Of those that were played,
there were wins over Balbriggan, Malahide and Merrion, but the 2nds
first visit to St Columba's ended in defeat to Malahide. Safety looked
to have been achieved, before the LCU imposed a penalty for not playing enough games. Relegation was only avoided due to re-organisation of the leagues.
Cup
- Although the cup run didn't make up for
the league disappointment, there was a glimmer of hope. A first round
bye saw Senior 2 side Railway travel to Observatory Lane, where a rain
delayed, two evening nailbiter, saw Leinster prevail by 1 run, Ray
McDonnell proving to be the hero. The semi final against North County
was also desperately close, Leinster's 99 all out nearly being
defended,as North County won by 1 wicket.
Review
-
A
huge disappointment. Thi steam should be the strongest in Senior 3, not
fighting against relegation. Batting was the problem, and it's fair to
say that Pete Johnston, in his first season back in Rathmines, single
handedly kept the 2nds up. His 231 runs at 77, was way above anyone else. Only Rob Miley managed to piece together 100 runs for
the season (111@22.2) and Sean Singleton was the only other batsman to
score a 50. The bowling wasn't too bad though. Bikram Arora and Matt
Brownie led the way, taking 35 wickets between them (in fact Brownie
was rated the best bowler in the club at the end of July). PLenty of
other support in the few games played. A season to forget.
