Sevenths Introduction:
Similarly, the 7ths were established in 1999 by Bob Cramp, to give some league cricket to a few who weren't getting a game. However, after dipping their toes in the 1998 Minor Cup, the 7ths won Junior C at their first attempt in 1999, and had another promotion in 2002 (although the 6ths blocked them from moving up), before a successful league campaign in 2004 saw them move up to Junior A (where the 5ths were playing as recently as 1995!). They've also had runners-up medals in the 2000 and 2004 Minor Cups.

7th XI News 2010
July 25th - There was a feeling amongst the 7th's camp all week, that the opportunity to beat Civil Service had probably passed the week before. Civil Service as a club are very strong lower down the leagues, and their 3rds should be far too strong for Leinster 7ths. It shows what a great achievement the tie against the same opponents was the previous week. Not too much to shout about with the replay though. Civil Service got a pretty solid start, as LCC returned to St Columba's College for the first time this season. Ouams, Rajiv, Sharma, Kumar and Mehta (formerly of this parish) all got runs, as Service ran up a distinctly useful 202, all out from the penultimate ball. Not too much to say about the Leinster bowling either. Marty Block took 3-31, but it was from only 29 balls. In reply it just never got going. The run rate was five an over from the word go, but with wickets falling at one end, and Kenny Byrne holding firm at the other, the hold just got deeper. 88 all out was the final score, but the 7ths should be happy with a good cup run.

July 18th - An archetypal brilliant game to-ing and fro-ing all afternoon. This Junior Cup quarter final against Civil Service 3rds ended in a tie, with all three results possible until nearly the very end. For most of the last over, Leinster needed to scamper one more run to win (a tie is a tie), but Syed Akbar lost his balance off the last ball to be stumped. It was a great performance from the 7ths though, playing against a side who are riding high in the league above the 7ths. Only Sharma and Nugent got runs for Service, as Syed Akbar took 3-10 from 8 to put the squeeze on at the top of the order. Waqas Afridi and Vivek Singh also took a brace of wickets, and when the visitors were bowled out for 152, Leinster definitely were in with a shout. At approximately 60-1, it was looking good, but then a collapse that saw no one from 4 to 8 get into double figures, put Civil Service in the driving seat. A spirited 8th wicket partnership between Afridi and Akbar took Leinster close, but when debutant Jack Fitzgerald was run out, Allen Smith could only stand at the other end as Akbar failed to get the ball away. The reply was fixed for July 25th

June 16th - A glorious cup victory from the 7ths, and in particular Kenny Byrne, saw a 48 run win over Wicklow County 4ths. The game started in a horrific fashion as E Bridge was hit in the face whilst keeping to the first delivery. The game was then held up for an hour as a ambulance was sent from Loughlinstown. All at Leinster wish Mr Bridge a speedy recovery. After that, runs flowedas Byrne hit 57 (reaching 1000 7th team runs in the process), Zeeshan 50 and many other getting to 20. Wicklow never gave up, and thanks to a 71 from Collinge were there and there abouts. The irrepressable Marty Block took 4-32 from 8, and despite a late flurry of runs, the 7ths were home. The Hills or Civil Service await in Rathmines on July 18th in the next round.

June 12th - A bit of a dogfight on a fairly sporting pitch by all accounts, but an excellent 6th wicket partnership between Hedge and W Raza was enough to see the Civil Servants home by 5 wickets. Only Casserly (12) and Bharat (34) made double figures as the 7ths could only muster 83 all out in 28 overs. That seemed as if may have been enough as Civil Service then slipped to an estimated 50-5. Mssrs Raza and Hedge displayed calm heads to see the hosts home in 27 overs. Only 2 points from the match, whihc makes 65 from 150 in total (43.3%)

June 5th - A gloomy Bank holiday weekend in the skies was alleviated by a bright 7ths result, keeping them at 4th in the league. Jack Balbirnie may be the future of Pembroke, but it's John Delany who is currently setting the pulses racing in Leinster. His second knock in mens cricket produced a new highest score of 43 (beating last week's 39) as he provided the foundation of the 7ths 192-4. The fancy Gothic detailing was provided by S Akbar with 78*. In reply, most of the Pembroke batsmen got starts, but only L Tucker went on, making 52. Shiyas Basheer took 4-36 from eight, as the visitors fell well short at 159-8 from 36 overs. Leinster scored 21 points, taking them to 63 from 125 (50.4%)

May 23rd - Not really a good news week in the land of the 7ths. The LCU been busy penalising those miscreants who haven't provided an umpire for their matches, and hence the 7ths have been deducted five points for each of their first two matchs. That moves the 7ths percentage from 65.33% to 52% (39 points from 75). Then this four wicket loss to North County 5ths. The 7ths scored their highest total of the season - 185-7, but with the short boundaries and quick outfield in Inch, it was always 30-40 short. However, there was a glimpse of the future - John Delany, the latest graduate from the cricketing dynasty made his men's debut, and promptly scored 39 in his first knock. The first of many, many great knocks for Leinster. He didn't get too much support though, and although there was swinging along with the missing towards the end (Akbar 24, Jaffari 36), 185 wasn't enough. B Whyte took 4-17 from 8 which is fairly useful at any standard. Wickets did fall reguarly when North County batted, but never frequently enough, and for the thousandth time a Rooney won the match for Balrothery's finest, N Rooney with an undefeated 55. Leinster were a bowler short, and the combined efforts of the "5th" bowler were 8 overs for 57 runs, which was probably the difference in the sides, considering the other bowlers went for under four an over. Only 3 points gained, so now 42 from 100.

May 9th - Back to winning ways. The win was set up with an opening burst from Shiyas Basheer (3-25) and debutant Zeeshan (3-16). After that Clontarf struggled to recover, but were finally put out of their misery by Clontarf old boy (that's old, old, old, old boy), Allen Smith who took 2-20. How the 7ths missed his flight and guile last year. 138 runs were needed, and when the season's top scorer Kenny Byrne was run out for 26, there was a real sense that the game was there to be won. Khalim Chaudhary though once again produced the goods with 43. Five wickets were lost, before Leinster got home in the 38th over. 23 points to the victors, meaning 49 from 75 (65.33%) overall. It will be interesting to see how many of the 7ths players move up in this week's new registrations

May 2nd - All the cliches can come out here. "Great game", "Cricket was the winner", etc, etc. But I can't help feeling that it was a game that should have been won. On paper, it looks as if a valiant last minute 11 from Bob Cramp batting at number 10 nearly won the game. However it wasn't to be. Earlier, Merrion 7ths had made 153-9, roughly a par score. After a solid start, the introduction of Khalid and Shairafgan Chaudhary started a collapse - a case of like father like son, as both took 3-27 from eight overs. Along with 2-17 from Marty Block, these three bowlers reduced Merrion from something like 100-2 to 153 all out. My comment above regarding the look of the game on paper now comes into play. In reality it was a little bit different. Kenny Byrne dropped anchor at one end with 42, whilst the other batsmen pottered along at the other end (with Mssrs Bharat (21) and Basheer (26)), the 7ths looked good to make it two from two. When Byrne was out in the 37th over, 35 was needed from 19 balls and despite 14* from Shairafgan and the aforementioned 11 from Cramp, it was not to be. Five points from the match taked the 7ths to 26 from 50 (52%)

April 25th - A win that was maybe a bit more clear cut than the scorebook shows. Anything over four an over is an alright score at Division 12, so 168-7 in April wasn't bad at all. The Top 4 all contributed, Kenny Byrne (34), Trevor Dunne (19), Khalid Chaudhary (36 on debut), and D Bharat (21 also on debut). Trinity got off to a decent start though, with the opening pair putting on something like 35 before Chuadhary Senior got the first of his three wickets. Even then after Bharat and Cramp jnr bowled 8 overs, 0-50 between them, the game may have been in the balance. At the other end though, the wily skills of Marty Block took control. With no Chairmanship duties to worry about this year, much is to be expected of Marty. It was a great start, his 4-26 ending Trinity's resistance and delivering the 7ths 21 points (84%)

After a winter in which the 7th's future was questioned, Bob Cramp has returned to the team he established 11 years ago, with a huge recruitment drive in place to get numbers up. Every club needs an eleven that can play essentially for the fun of it, a side that can provide a haven for those who still want to play league cricket, but not neccessarily of the cut-throat kind. The 7ths have now settled on a level that can provide this, after probably being too high for the past few seasons. Division 12 is a bit of a mix of teams, with Leinster being the strongest based on 2009. Trinty 3, Clontarf 5, The Hills 5, Merrion 7 and Pembroke 6 were all Junior B teams last year, and North County 5 and Civil Service 4 were slumming it in Junior C, so on paper (if only the game were played on paper etc, etc), Cramp's men (and women) should be the strongest in the Division. Four away games start the season, but I suggest that there will be enough organisation this year, to make the last game of the season, against Civil Service in Rathmines, a victory parade. Prediction - Champions
