6th XI News 2010 |
Sunday 25th July - Different opponents, different ground, same result. The batting order failed to fire, and despite not being dismissed, could only get to 123 in 40 overs, with no one passing 30. As pernormal, I can't tell you which of the Pembroke bowlers was the most miserly, but presumably, the game was on Sydney Parade's new mat, which can't be too difficult to bat on. The hosts found the going a good bit easier, knocking off the runs with 12 overs and 9 wickes to spare. Zero points from this encounter, meaning 42 from 200 (21%). I've been doing a bit of mid season account checking though, and we have been docked another 10 points for umpiring duty (or lack of it), and there is another point discrepancy. Therefore , the 6ths are on 31 points (15.5%). Three league games remain. Three convincing victories would give the 6ths 106 points from 275 (38.5%) - even that may not be enough

Sunday 18th July - An advantage of the 6th's cricket at the moment, is that I don't have to spend hours eulogising about daring performances and successes. Unfortunately another loss, this time against North County, with Khalid Chaudhary top-scoring with 34 in a total of 134 all out. It's possible that North County struggled, but from the "scorecard" provided, it's impossible to tell. Shiyas Basheer took 2-19, and Chaudhary snr 2-20, as The Fingallians passed the 6th's total with 4 wickets in hand, and 7 overs to spare. I make it now played 7, 42 points from 175 (24%)

Sunday 11th July - Another loss, and the 6ths fight against relegation intensifies. Only three points from this match, but the 48 run defeat was probably even more convincing than it sounds, judging by the demeanour of those players arriving back in Observatory Lane from Kenilworth. 39 points from 150 is only 26%, but I notice that a further 11 points have disappeared from the 6ths account on the LCU website - I'll investigate. The match itself saw Merrion rack up 216, with no Leinster bowler getting more than a wicket. Asim Mumtaz (38) and Ben Rutherford (33*) offered a glint of resistance, but it was to no avail.

Sunday 4th July - A tight, exciting win for Pembroke against the 6ths. A brilliant century for the Pembroke opener - scoring 130 out of 154, coming not long after the Pembroke opening bowler took a stunning 8-13 made for a great game of cricket for the Sydney Paraders. Leinster managed to get to 153-8 from their 40 overs, despite that opening burst, Asim Mumtaz once again top scoring with 30. When Pembroke came to chase, the 6ths kept plugging away as the opener scored his magnificent ton, Khalid Chaudhary taking 3-36 to be the best bowler. Of course that might have been how it happened, without a full scorecard, I really haven't a clue. One point for the 6ths, meaning 36 from 125 (28.8%)

Sunday 27th June - If the other team pages are the iphone in your pocket, giving you up-to-date info when you need it, the 6ths is an Aertel page, plodding along, and not really giving you much when it does appear. Hence the 6ths lost to Phoenix by 20 odd runs at the weekend. Zeeshan KB was the best bowler with 3-21 from 8, as Phoenix made 27 more runs than we eventually got. In reply, there was an Asim Mumtaz 50, but little else, as we got 169-8. The scorecard is below if you want to try and work out more info (you'll struggle). Four points gives the 6ths a provisional 35 from 100

Monday 21st June - Same old story I'm afraid. Another beating, and another incomplete scorecard. A strong Dundrum 3rds made 144, the returning Khizer "Ali" Khan taking 3-16 from 16 balls. When Dundrum came to bowl, there wasn't much resistance from the Leinster order, so I won't waste pixels here describing it. The scorecard for what it's worth can be seen on the fixture list at the bottom of the page

Sunday 20th June - It feels like a summer of discontent, with a strapline, "due to continuing industrial action, only the barest of details can be made available for public consumption". Nothing of the sort of course, but unfortunately the 6ths scorecards aren't as detailed as all the other teams, and hence only a short report can be given. Halverstown made 243, only Shiyas Basheer going at under five an over with 1-25 from six. The 6ths were never going to get there, and were all out, before the sandwiches had been digested, Ben Rutherford being the one batsman to hold his head up high with 26* (although Zeeshan KB scored 24 in fairness). The 6ths won't be gracing the Inter Cup final in Rathmines with their presence, but in fairness they are probably playing a cup too high.

Sunday 13th June - Normally a trip down to Halverstown on a summer's afternoon would be one of the summer's highlights, with a dip in the Liffey to finish the day off. However the tragic death of Alan Ruddock the week before, coupled with the less than promising weather forecast cast a gloom over the proceedings. There was some cricket played before the rain though (and again only brief details, as the scorecard doesn't help). Halverstown batted first, getting 222 from 40 overs, the stand out parts of the bowling figures being the expensive returns of Shiyas Basheer (0-26 from 3) and Marty Block (1-36 from 3). There's probably a story behind them, but I'll have to pass. Zeehsan KB was the pick of the bowlers with 3-18 from 4. In reply, not a great deal happend, as the 6ths got to 48-1 before the rains came down. 14 points each, meaning the 6ths are on 31 from 75 (41.3%)
|
Sunday 6th June - The match against Oakhill was called off around midday due to the persistent rain
|
Monday 31st May - The 6ths won their Whelan Cup first round match, and I now have a scorecard. Unfortunately, I may have been better off without, and can only give cursory details. Railway batted and got 101 from 120 balls. Two wickets a piece for Akbar, Basheer, Chaudhary (K) and May. In reply, the 6ths were in a spot of bother, before Marty Block (17*) and Joe Lyons (6*) saw us home with an indeterminate number of balls left. The "scorecard" is below if you need any illuminating.

Sunday 30th May - Peter May has been recruited to write the 6ths reports for the season. Finally a bit of quality to add to the gibberish I write. Here's his first report. "Leinster 6s were well beaten by Merrion 6s on Sunday afternoon. Having lost the toss Leinster were put into field and made the worst of a bad situation. The outfield at Bird Avenue made it suitable for a Battle of Paschendaele re-enactment and a crowd of five lads swilling Special Brew and White Lightening was its very own Bay 13. Nevertheless if Niall Carroll's men had matched the quintet for co-ordination and alertness in the field, they might well have edged a second successive victory. Instead six straightforward catches and another half a dozen half-chances went down as Merrion posted 174 all out in 39 overs, Khalid Chaudhary the pick of the bowlers with a five-fer. In response Howard Block (29), Chaudhary (22) and Asim Mumtaz (30) made good contributions without ever getting in touch of the run rate. Leinster were bundled out for about 110." The 6ths were docked five points from their first match of the season, so now stand at 17 from 50, 34%.
|
Sunday 9th May - Not too much information on the 6th's first game of the season. The top four, three of whom had got their eye in for the 7ths the day before, all scored well. The all-time 6ths and 7ths run scorer, Trevor Dunne had 35, Khalim Chaudhary 20, Zeeshan 23 and Asim Mumtaz 40. With that base there was still time for Shairafgan Chaudhary to hit 24, getting the 6ths up to 183-6 from the 40. That was the highest score on the Mountpleasant square this season, but Phoenix did their best to chase. Welcome returnee Paul Rodgers took 1-19 after his sabbatical, Ben Rutherford 2-30 and most of the others (eight bowlers used) got a wicket. A narrow win, that must have been about a thousand times more exciting than I've made it sound. Leinster start the season with 20 points to Phoenix's 5 (80%)

A tough 2010 season awaits for the 6ths, who were the lowest placed qualifier for Division 9. Halverstown and Phoenix 4 were both playing in Inter A last year, and coupled with the top half of Inter B, the 6ths are up against it. Oakhill/Wicklow County 3rds will be an unknown quantity, with Merrion 6, North County 4 and Pembroke 4 completing the division. Niall Carroll is this season's skipper, and although he hasn't played too much 6th team cricket in recent years, a fine 2009 with the 7ths should lead to an invigorated captain. Two trips to Halverstown in mid June stand out - firstly league, then cup. As stated, every game is tough, with the battle of the 6th teams - Merrion and Leinster perhaps being most keenly contested. With Adamstown pulling out of the league (or at least being mistakenly entered), there are only 12 league games, meaning plenty of time with the feet up! It all starts on May 9th at home to Phoneix 4ths in Observatory Lane. Prediction - 8th of 8 (Sorry!)
